Introduction

The Optimizely Documentation team is looking for a skilled Senior Technical Writer to help create the content users and developers need, when and where they need it. You will work in a fast-paced, Agile environment with subject matter experts from the Product and Engineering teams, as well as partner with teams like Education, Onboarding, Enablement and Customer Success to ensure product documentation is accurate, up-to-date and meets users’ needs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Organize, design, and create end user and developer documentation, including API and SDK documentation as well as developer walkthroughs.
  • Translate complex technical topics into clear, concise language and create effective visual aids.
  • Adhere to style guide standards.
  • Follow product release cycles and collaborate with product/engineering teams to determine the impact on existing documentation or need for new documentation.
  • Assess documentation quality and recommend revisions to scope, format, and content.
  • Manage multiple projects, including documentation for major product launches, and communicate progress to stakeholders, documentation team, and manager.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of Optimizely software products and function as a documentation expert for the company who can reliably write documentation for any product.
  • Actively contribute to team meetings, including retrospectives and style guide meetings.
  • Mentor less experienced team members regarding best practices and industry knowledge.
  • Coordinate process improvement initiatives, such as content migration, updating old documentation, dashboard creation/maintenance, and style guide revisions.
  • Provide and receive peer review feedback.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Competency in at least one programming language and experience with code repositories, with a solid understanding of Git and version control best practices
  • Proficient with Markdown and HTML.
  • Ability to grasp technical concepts quickly, curious to learn new technologies.
  • Understanding of Agile software development processes, including writing user stories and managing tasks in an iterative environment.
  • Strong communication skills, including:
    • Writing, editing, and diagramming.
    • Knowledge of Standard American English grammar and technical writing style norms.
    • Ability to listen actively and ask relevant questions.
  • Ability to work as a productive team member to:
    • Handle multiple concurrent projects.
    • Prioritize work under pressure.
    • Work independently to research, plan, and manage projects.
    • Adhere to team processes.
  • Ability to act independently to:
    • Proactively determine methods and procedures on new or special assignments.
    • Creatively consider potential solutions, resolve issues, and work directly with subject matter experts.

Writing Samples: Submit a portfolio with a cover letter and 3-5 relevant technical writing samples for review.

Education & Other Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Technical Writing, Technical Communication, Computer Science, or equivalent, required.
  • 3-7 years of related documentation experience in a fast-paced or Agile environment.
