Introduction

We are looking for a very special individual contributor software engineer who has the engineering credibility and social skills to nucleate an elite team of data engineers. This team will be working to unlock the analytic potential inside our world-class CDP for our clients and ourselves. At Optimizely, we don’t just build pretty dashboards. We make data actionable so that our clients can make confident decisions and grow their businesses. In this position, you’ll be on the ground floor of the team that’s going to take this capability to the next level.

Though every Senior Staff Software Engineer will look different, they are all respected technical leaders who internalize business strategy and/or challenge internal or external customer use cases to propose and solve problems that have a significant business impact across multiple teams or systems. Their impact could be by playing a leadership role in building a roadmap and enabling its execution across multiple teams or systems. Their impact could also be by anticipating the longer-term consequences of technical decisions they are not directly involved in and inserting themselves productively to influence towards a more optimal decision/direction. 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Leading development and maintenance of the Analytics and Reporting services built on top of our already robust CDP.
  • Designing architectures that are performant and cost-effective. Fast is a feature.
  • Recognizing opportunities to transform data into knowledge. Think like a Data Scientist. Work like an engineer.
  • Ensuring compliance with data protection regulations. We lead the industry in regulation-compliant first-party data empowerment.
  • Collaborating with engineers and product managers to deliver on the Analytics and Reporting roadmap.

 

  • Work is self-generated and self-directed based on manager-approved goals
  • Project scope becomes more strategic in nature
  • Their reporting structure or team does not limit their influence in working with other technical disciplines or teams
  • Deeply understand the architecture and infrastructure, across technical disciplines, for a major part of the business or product and can clearly articulate the enterprise-grade software reliability expectations of that part of the business or product
  • They are widely consulted by multiple teams for their advice and input on cross-functional projects
  • Has tangible impact across multiple teams and/or systems. This impact could come by not just executing an existing technical roadmap but playing a leadership role in building that roadmap and enabling its execution across multiple systems and teams with tangible impact on the business. Or it could come by anticipating downstream effects of projects they are not directly involved in and inserting themselves productively to influence towards a more optimal decision/direction.
  • Actively helps close candidates.
  • Partners with appropriate people to improve the interview process and experience (e.g., interview kits, grading rubrics, removing bias, etc.).

Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrated excellence in software engineering and architecture.
  • Fluency in many languages, including Kotlin and Java.
  • Ninja-level SQL abilities.
  • Experience with Cloud Computing platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Practical experience with reliability at scale in distributed systems.
  • Experience with containerized applications (Docker/Kubernetes.)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in implementing and architecting complex data management and BI capabilities.
  • Knowledge of build/release systems and processes.
  • SaaS experience.
  • Familiarity with BI tools like Looker, Tableau, Power BI, Sisense, etc.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree (Computer Science or engineering preferred) or equivalent work experience
