Introduction

An M2 manager (team lead) leads the day-to-day work of an engineering team in terms of process and delivery needs, with limited people management responsibility. Team leads hold an entry level manager role, usually on a growth track from an IC to a manager. Team leads are usually responsible for a smaller team and take an active part in the team’s technical work like an upper-level IC. Team leads take delegated responsibility for most of the people management from a more senior manager who retains budget responsibility and parts of the management responsibility.

Job Responsibilities

- Leads both operational and directional aspects for a single team

- Accountable for team’s consistent delivery of high quality, on time work product; dependencies and impacts have been vetted and mitigated upon final delivery

- Accountable for team’s utilization of system lifecycle best practices

- Partially responsible for employee life cycle, including advising hiring manager by screening and interviewing candidates, on-boarding, goal alignment, work assignment, coaching / performance management, career growth planning and addressing skill gaps for each direct report.

- Builds team with healthy dynamics

- Upholds department and company policies and reinforces them when necessary

- Steadily pursues self-improvement, particularly in the areas of management and engineering leadership

Knowledge and Experience

- Very knowledgeable in their team’s technical areas, systems, and processes, and they can quickly understand, verify, and positively influence their team’s decisions that may also impact other teams

- Has the ability to break down team deliverables into meaningful projects and de-risk delivery; empowers and delegates to team members

- Works with individuals on their team to create and document clear career growth and development plans; measures and communicates progress or lack thereof, clearly, and effectively, including specifying positive or negative consequences

- Ability to drive work that creates positive business outcomes

Education

Bachelor’s Degree (Computer Science or engineering preferred) or equivalent work experience
